The fi-compass event ‘The role of social financial intermediaries (SFIs) in deploying financial instruments under the European Social Fund (ESF) in the 2014-2020 programming period' was held on 17 October 2017 in Brussels. ESF stakeholders and financial institutions heard from keynote speakers which included Baudouin Baudru, Cabinet expert from the DG EMPL, Silvia Costa, Member of the European Parliament and Brando Benifei, Member of the European Parliament, about the necessity to find more effective ways to deliver support for social objectives.

Vienna saw the first thematic fi‑compass workshop on European Social Fund (ESF) financial instruments supporting self‑employment and entrepreneurship under Thematic Objective 8. This full day workshop was attended by representatives from ESF managing authorities, financial intermediaries, and other stakeholders from across the EU.

New advisory services for European Social Fund financial instruments

The fi-compass European Social Fund (ESF) work stream has recently published new language versions of the handbook on using ESF financial instruments for promoting inclusion, sustainable jobs and better education. French, German, Italian and Spanish language versions (in addition to the original English version) of this handbook are now available for downloading and sharing through the fi-compass website’s Resource Library.

Slovenian financial instrument offers integrated package of business support sources

Slovenia's experiences with a financial instrument that offered investment support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the European Social Fund (ESF), with the corresponding national co-financing shares, are the subject of a newly-published fi-compass case study. This Slovenian 'Programme of Financial Engineering Instruments for SMEs' was designed by the Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy (in its capacity as managing authority) during the 2007-2013 period.
