European Commission launches EU Agenda for Cities: a new strategic vision for Europe’s urban future

The European Commission today unveiled the EU Agenda for Cities, a new initiative aimed at strengthening urban development policy and reinforcing the central role of cities in addressing Europe’s most pressing challenges.

Through this agenda, the Commission seeks to empower cities to better respond to issues such as sustainable development, housing, social cohesion, climate resilience and migration — recognising urban areas as key actors for implementing EU priorities on the ground.

For decision-makers, local authorities and financial intermediaries involved in managing EU funds, the Agenda provides strategic orientation to align investments with long-term urban goals: boosting green infrastructure, enhancing affordable housing, and improving social inclusion in cities across Europe.

fi-compass stakeholders — including managing authorities, implementing bodies and local governments — are encouraged to follow developments closely: the Agenda sets the context for future calls for proposals and may influence the design of urban-oriented investment instruments under EU funds.

By offering a coherent vision for sustainable, inclusive and resilient cities, the EU Agenda for Cities aims to shape the urban landscape across Europe for decades to come — and to ensure that cities remain at the heart of EU cohesion and development policy.
